Features

Everything you need to get your space back.

One scan answers the question every Mac owner eventually asks: where did all my storage go?

Space by folder

See which folders take the most space at a glance. Click a bar to open that folder; the chart and table follow you down.

Find the big files

The 200 largest files under any folder, biggest first.

Know what kind of space

Apps, developer files, video, photos, audio and documents. node_modules and .git count as Developer.

Search everything

Find any file or folder by name across the whole scan, largest first.

Private by design

No network access, no account, no analytics. Your file list never leaves your Mac.

Clean up without the fear

Collect folders and files with + or drag them onto the Cleanup card. Before anything moves you see every path and the total. Everything goes to the Trash, so you can always put it back.

Seriously fast

A Rust scanner reads whole folders per system call across 16 threads. Millions of files in seconds.

Feels at home on your Mac

A native window with a clean custom title bar, light and dark themes that follow your system, and keyboard shortcuts for everything.

How it works

Three steps. About a minute.

  1. 01

    Pick a disk

Choose your startup disk, an external drive, or any folder. You can also drop a folder onto the window.

  2. 02

    See where it went

Charts and tables fill in live while the scan runs. Drill into folders, filter, sort, search.

  3. 03

    Clear it safely

Collect what you no longer need, review the exact list, and move it to the Trash in one click.

Open source

Built in the open. Yours to read, fork and improve.

Lacuna is MIT licensed. The scanner is Rust, the interface is React and TypeScript, and the app is a 6.6 MB Tauri bundle. No black boxes: you can read exactly what it does with your files.

  • Rust scanner using getattrlistbulk and 16 threads
  • Sizes match du; hard links counted once
  • Deletion re-checked in Rust before anything moves

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is Lacuna free?

Yes. Lacuna is free and open source under the MIT license. There is no paid tier, no account and no trial.

Is it safe to delete files with Lacuna?

Lacuna never deletes anything outright. Items you collect are moved to the Trash, so you can put them back. Before anything moves you see the exact paths and the total size, and the folder you scanned can never be removed.

Why does Lacuna ask for Full Disk Access?

macOS protects some folders, such as Mail and Safari data. Without Full Disk Access their size cannot be counted and they show as “No permission”. Lacuna works without it; granting it just makes the totals complete.

Does Lacuna upload my file list?

No. Lacuna has no network access, analytics or telemetry. The scan stays in memory on your Mac and is gone when you quit.

How is it so fast?

The scanner is written in Rust. It reads a whole folder per system call with getattrlistbulk and runs 16 threads at once, so a disk with millions of files takes seconds, not minutes.

Which Macs does it support?

Any Mac running macOS 10.15 Catalina or later. Windows and Linux are on the roadmap.
